Recent research noted in HBR (Jan-Feb 2011) says:

“Seven people is the optimal size of a decision-making group. Each additional member reduces effectiveness by 10%.”

We find this good advice to families as they design their boards and their family councils. Many, we find, because of their instinct for inclusiveness, make their governing bodies too large.
